We've since expanded our tentacles to New Zealand, and we are now looking for a Senior Data Analyst, based in Wellington. More about the role
It’s a particularly exciting and busy period for the Octopus NZ data team. Our data lake is in place and we’re cracking on with building the models that sit around that. There’s a big to-do list that we are working through and there are new requirements popping up all the time. So, we’re looking to add an intermediate or senior data analyst to our NZ team.
We’re a small team, so this role will be involved end-to-end; from requirements, to specifying what data we need and plugging any data gaps, designing and building models, figuring out how best to deliver them, delivering them and the ongoing refinement of everything. Alongside the data lead, this role will be an important mentor, helping guide and develop our two junior analysts. For this aspect of the role, we’d prefer someone to be based in the Wellington office most of the time.
As part of the NZ Retail Team our primary goals are to help our operations team serve customers better, improve processes, and to ensure that as a company we’re meeting our data provision obligations to the market. We also work across the rest of the Octopus NZ business, supporting the data needs of the finance, marketing and pricing teams. On the technical front our local efforts are supported by a global data engineering team.
What You’ll Do:
- Focus on building out analytics: reports and dashboards, regulatory market submissions (and the data pipelines that feed them) to support operations, and sales and marketing
- Creating tools that help our operations teams work better and smarter
- Become a domain expert, supporting management’s questions, and most importantly, making sure the right questions are being asked.
- Helping develop our junior analysts
- You’ll be involved in some really exciting projects, and doing a lot of analysis to help steer these new products.

Our Data Stack:
- AWS cloud infrastructure
- Databricks Delta Lake for data lake and warehouse storage and querying
- dbt for data modelling and transformations
- Lightdash as our BI tool
- Spark for large data processing
- Python data ecosystem as main scripting and analytics language
- Jupyter and Jupyter Hub for notebook analytics and collaboration
- Airflow for task scheduling
- Kubernetes for data services and task orchestration
- Github, Circle CI, Grafana and Prometheus for version control, deployment and monitoring
- Streamlit for serving of data products

This means you will

  • Have a passion for working in energy and contributing to the energy transition
  • Be curiosity and self-driven - as an early data employee, its essential you have the initiative to make decisions yourself, and can find solutions to novel problems without lots of help and support
  • Have an engineering mindset - eager to build robust tools
  • Have experience and skills in:
  • SQL querying
  • DBT data modelling
  • Building reports and dashboards in a BI tool
  • Github
  • And bonus points for experience in:
  • Data engineering
  • Python (scripting and basic app development)
  • Creating statistical models & time series forecasts
  • The electricity or other utilities industries
