Houston, TX, USA
Posted on Sep 28, 2023

Climate Robotics is building the next generation of mobile pyrolysis system. Our trailer-mounted systems convert agricultural and forestry waste into biochar, a powerful soil amendment and carbon removal technology. Biochar is one of the most promising and lowest-cost solutions to global climate change, and we are excited to do our part in commercializing this transformational technology.

We've partnered with some of the leading buyers of carbon removal credits, including Microsoft, to build a new type of business that helps farmers while fighting climate change. Climate Robotics is well-capitalized by top VC investors in climate tech, including Congruent Ventures, Grantham Foundation, and Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. We're looking to expand our team of engineers and scientists to help build an entirely new industry in the nation's energy capital, Houston, Texas.

We have several openings for highly experienced, dynamic, and innovative mechanical engineers. You will join a team of engineers developing the next generation of mobile pyrolysis systems to sequester gigatons of CO2. Successful candidates will have demonstrated expertise in scaling complex, heavy industrial, or high-temperature chemical processing systems from the early stages (biomass, gasification, pyrolysis, and agriculture).

We are looking for candidates with demonstrated expertise in the following areas:

Thermal Design

  • Strong fundamentals in thermal expansion, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
  • Prior experience in solving novel and challenging thermo-mechanical design problems for high-temperature processes
  • Experience modeling, testing, and designing thermo-mechanical components; examples include fans, heat sinks, and heat exchangers.
  • Experience designing pressure vessels
  • Experience with fatigue and fracture analysis in metals at elevated temperature
  • Fluency in the use of FEA simulation tools for thermo-mechanical analysis

Hydraulic/Fluid Power

  • Designing and installing hydraulic power systems for heavy mobile equipment
  • Troubleshooting of hydraulics issues
  • Experience working with power take-off (PTO) and hydraulic power units
  • Experience in designing hydraulic drive systems at high and low speed
  • Experience with hydraulic PID control systems

Product Commercialization

  • Prior experience designing heavy industrial equipment that operates at high temperatures
  • Prior success scaling pilot projects up to commercial scale
  • Previous success in developing systems for continuous operation
  • Address product challenges, including testing and qualifying new materials, processes, techniques, and designs

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Conduct and lead prototype and product testing at the component and subsystem level
  • Assist with software/control systems testing and validation
  • Conduct and lead design reviews
  • Select vendors and specify components. Work with vendors on new component requirements or component failures
  • Design, packaging, and 3D modeling
  • Mentoring or managing junior engineers
  • Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a minimum of 7+ years relevant engineering experience or Master of Science in Engineering and a minimum of 5 years relevant engineering experience
  • Expert machine design knowledge
  • Strong experience with SolidWorks, including PDM
  • Hands-on experience in prototyping, troubleshooting, and getting dirt on your face
  • Proven experience developing mechanical systems for mass production
  • Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, valving, sensors, and electrical control components
  • Prior startup experience or ability to work in a fast-paced environment with challenging deadlines

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience with biomass, gasification, and pyrolysis beyond the lab scale
  • Maintaining design documents and tracking design changes across a multidisciplinary team of engineers
  • Familiarity with FEA, ANSYS, and Solidworks Simulation
  • Competitive salary and stock options in the company
  • Health benefits (medical, dental, and vision)
  • Flexible vacation & time-off policy
  • Relocation assistance available for qualified candidates
  • 401(k) match
